Description
Beginning in an anterior neck radiographic projection, the thyroid gland appears as paired right and left lobes flanking the upper trachea, joined across the midline by the isthmus that usually lies anterior to the second to fourth tracheal rings. Superiorly, the lobes rise toward the thyroid cartilage and cricoid cartilage, while inferiorly they taper toward the thoracic inlet, with the clavicles and upper manubrium providing hard bony reference points in the same field. Over the course of the 3D animation, the gland’s contours and density are clarified against the radiopaque cervical spine posteriorly and the air column of the larynx and trachea centrally, helping the viewer track laterality and level as the camera subtly reorients and the landmarks fade in sequentially. Orientation is immediate. Radiographic localization matters because thyroid enlargement and nodularity often declare themselves indirectly, by mass effect on the airway or by asymmetric soft tissue fullness rather than by sharply outlined margins.
