Description
Beginning in the lower cervical airway, the trachea descends in the midline and bifurcates at the carina into the right and left main bronchi, seen as radiolucent branching tubes within the thoracic cavity. The right main bronchus tracks more vertical and slightly wider than the left, then divides into lobar (secondary) bronchi and onward into segmental (tertiary) bronchi that radiate laterally and inferiorly into the lung fields. As the sequence progresses, the bronchial tree tapers toward smaller bronchioles while the cartilaginous support becomes less apparent distally, consistent with the transition from cartilage-ringed proximal bronchi to noncartilaginous small airways. Bony thoracic landmarks and soft-tissue silhouettes frame the airway paths. Radiographic bronchial anatomy matters whenever you need to interpret air column changes, peribronchial thickening, or focal obstruction on chest imaging.
