Description

Beginning at the distal trachea, the animation tracks airflow past the carina into the right and left principal (main) bronchi, then follows the bronchial tree as it divides into lobar (secondary) and segmental (tertiary) bronchi within the female lungs. Branches extend inferiorly toward the lung bases and laterally to the costal surfaces while smaller bronchi course medially toward the hila, where their relationship to the pulmonary arteries becomes apparent. Cartilage-supported bronchi transition into bronchioles as the airway caliber narrows, and the sequence emphasizes the stepwise loss of cartilage plates and the increasing dominance of smooth muscle as bronchioles approach the respiratory bronchioles and alveolar ducts. Branching repeats in a predictable, fractal-like pattern. It is easy to follow.
