A localized thymic mass becomes apparent as a soft-tissue opacity along the mediastinal contour, with sequential highlighting of its relationship to the tracheal air column medially and the lung apices laterally. As the sequence advances, the lesion is isolated from surrounding mediastinal shadows to emphasize its position anterior to the aortic arch and proximal pulmonary arteries. Calcific foci, if present, are treated as punctate high-density accents within the tumor. Radiographic characterization of a thymic neoplasm matters because the superior mediastinum is crowded, and small changes in contour can be the first clue to thymic carcinoma, thymoma, or less commonly lymphoma or germ cell tumor.
