Description
Beginning at the occipital bone and nuchal ligament, the animation layers the posterior cervical musculature from superficial to deep, tracking the trapezius as it spans inferolaterally toward the acromion and spine of scapula and the sternocleidomastoid as a lateral boundary at the posterolateral neck. Beneath, splenius capitis and splenius cervicis sweep superolaterally from the spinous processes to the mastoid region and transverse processes, while semispinalis capitis rises medially toward the occiput over the cervical spinous processes. Deeper still, longissimus capitis, multifidus, and the suboccipital group (rectus capitis posterior major and minor, obliquus capitis superior and inferior) appear around the atlanto-occipital and atlanto-axial joints as the cervical column articulates through extension and rotation. Landmarks stay clear. Posterior neck anatomy matters most when you need to localize pain generators and safely navigate depth: trapezius and levator scapulae trigger points often refer to the occiput and shoulder girdle, while irritation near the C2 dorsal ramus can present as cervicogenic headache or greater occipital neuralgia. Showing the sequence of layered reveal makes the muscular planes intuitive, from the investing fascia and trapezius down to the suboccipital triangle, a relationship that can be hard to reconstruct from separate plates.
