Medial fibers approach the midline over the cervical linea alba, while lateral margins taper toward the sternocleidomastoid and the carotid sheath. As the sequence progresses, layers separate and reapproximate, clarifying how the pretracheal fascia invests these muscles and tethers them inferiorly to the manubrium and clavicle and superiorly toward the hyoid. The trachea remains the fixed midline landmark. Anterior neck access depends on this anatomy.
