Description
Layered X-ray rendering brings the male heart into view as a moving radiographic silhouette within the thorax, with the cardiac apex directed anteroinferiorly and to the left against the left hemidiaphragm. Across the sequence, the right atrium and right ventricle form the right and anterior cardiac borders, while the left ventricle and left auricle project to the left cardiac margin, with the ascending aorta and pulmonary trunk arising superiorly at the base. The superior vena cava descends along the right mediastinal contour to the right atrium, and the inferior vena cava enters from below, while coronary arteries and cardiac veins trace the epicardial surface as subtler opacities relative to the myocardium. Radiographic boundary anatomy matters every time you interpret a chest radiograph. Seeing how the mediastinal contours are built helps separate normal variation from pathology, for example cardiomegaly assessed by cardiothoracic ratio on a frontal projection, a prominent pulmonary trunk in pulmonary hypertension, or left atrial enlargement that can produce a double density and splaying of the carina. Motion adds clarity.
