Description
Within the female breast, adipose tissue is organized into lobulated compartments separated by Cooper’s ligaments (suspensory ligaments) that extend from the dermis of the skin to the deep pectoral fascia overlying pectoralis major. As the animation progresses, fat pads are seen interdigitating with the glandular parenchyma, with mammary lobules and lactiferous ducts positioned more centrally and posteriorly toward the nipple-areolar complex. Superficially, subcutaneous fat predominates anterior to the gland, while deeper fat planes lie between glandular tissue and the retromammary space, allowing the breast to glide on the chest wall. Compartment boundaries. Clear and repeatable. Clinical reading of breast imaging depends on these relationships. Cooper’s ligaments explain the pattern of skin tethering and retraction in invasive carcinoma and can account for architectural distortion on mammography or tomosynthesis when the normal fibrous lattice is pulled or disrupted. By showing compartmentalization over time rather than as a single frame, the sequence clarifies why edema, fat necrosis after trauma or reduction mammoplasty, and postoperative seromas track along septa, and how glandular tissue can appear to shift relative to surrounding fat with patient positioning or gentle compression. Use this animation in breast anatomy and radiologic anatomy teaching, including correlation sessions for screening mammography, breast ultrasound, and MRI where fat, fibroglandular tissue, and Cooper’s ligaments must be distinguished quickly.
