Description

Beginning at the distal esophagus, the animation tracks the gastroesophageal junction into the cardia, then sweeps superiorly over the fundus before settling along the corpus (body) toward the pyloric antrum and pylorus. As the stomach rotates in 3D, the lesser curvature remains medial and concave, continuous with the lesser omentum, while the greater curvature arcs laterally and inferiorly where the greater omentum would drape from the gastric wall. A tight muscular ring at the gastroduodenal junction is identified as the pyloric sphincter, positioned proximal to the first part of the duodenum and distal to the antrum. Orientation matters in clinic. The cardia and fundus sit just inferior to the left hemidiaphragm, which is why sliding hiatal hernia and reflux esophagitis cluster at this junction, and why endoscopic landmarks at the Z-line, gastric folds, and cardia are taught as a sequence rather than isolated labels. Distally, the pyloric canal and sphincter are shown as a continuous thickening of circular smooth muscle, a setup that helps explain the functional gastric outlet obstruction seen in peptic ulcer–related edema or scarring and the delayed gastric emptying patterns encountered in diabetic gastroparesis. Motion clarifies the continuity of regions. Static plates often flatten it.
