Description
Centered in the male pelvis, the prostate gland (glandula prostatica) sits immediately inferior to the urinary bladder, its base abutting the bladder neck while its apex tapers inferiorly toward the urogenital diaphragm. Through the gland runs the prostatic urethra, oriented superior to inferior, and the paired ejaculatory ducts traverse the posterior prostate to open into the urethral lumen at the level of the seminal colliculus. Posteriorly, the prostatic capsule faces the anterior wall of the rectum, while the neurovascular bundles course posterolaterally along the fascia of Denonvilliers and the pelvic floor muscles form the inferior support. Motion cues clarify orientation. Rotation and staged highlights make this anatomy easier to teach in the way it is encountered clinically, where the gland’s zonal organization matters more than surface shape: benign prostatic hyperplasia arises from the transition zone around the proximal urethra, while most adenocarcinomas originate in the posterior peripheral zone accessible on digital rectal examination.
