Description
Beginning at the cervical trachea, the animation tracks airflow distally to the carina and into the right and left main bronchi, with the right bronchus wider, shorter, and more vertical as it passes inferolaterally toward the hilum. Branching proceeds into lobar (secondary) bronchi and then segmental (tertiary) bronchi, forming a bronchial tree that fans laterally and posteriorly within the lungs, while cartilage transitions from C-shaped tracheal rings to discontinuous bronchial plates as airway caliber narrows. Along the way, bronchioles appear beyond the last cartilage-bearing generations, showing progressively thicker smooth muscle relative to lumen and the approach to terminal and respiratory bronchioles. Clear anatomy. Healthy architecture matters because the normal branching angles, wall thickness, and cartilaginous support establish what you expect to see at bronchoscopy and on radiographs, and they also explain common disease patterns when that baseline is lost.
