Beginning in the peripheral tissues, lymphatic capillaries coalesce into collecting lymphatic vessels that track alongside the venous system, converging toward regional lymph nodes in the cervical chain, axilla, mediastinum, mesentery, and the superficial and deep inguinal groups. The sequence follows lymph superiorly and medially from the lower limb and pelvis toward the para-aortic and iliac nodes, then into the cisterna chyli anterior to the L1 to L2 vertebral bodies. From there, the thoracic duct ascends through the posterior mediastinum, posterior to the esophagus and between the aorta and azygos vein, then arches laterally at the root of the neck to empty at the left venous angle (junction of the left internal jugular and subclavian veins), contrasted with the shorter right lymphatic duct draining the right head and neck, right upper limb, and right thorax. Major lymphoid organs appear in context, including the spleen in the left upper quadrant and thymic tissue in the anterior mediastinum. Flow is the point.
