Description
Sweeping inferiorly from the lumbosacral plexus (ventral rami L4 to S3), the sciatic nerve emerges through the greater sciatic foramen and passes inferior to piriformis into the deep gluteal space. A sequential descent tracks it deep to gluteus maximus, posterior to the hip joint capsule, and over the short lateral rotators (superior gemellus, obturator internus, inferior gemellus, quadratus femoris) as it courses midway between the greater trochanter laterally and the ischial tuberosity medially. The animation continues along the posterior thigh, adjacent to the hamstring origin on the ischial tuberosity, then follows the nerve toward its terminal division into tibial and common fibular components near the popliteal fossa. Big nerve. Big target. Clinically, this is the pathway behind most sciatica patterns, where compression or irritation from an L4-L5 or L5-S1 disc herniation, foraminal stenosis, or traction injury produces radiating pain into the posterior limb with variable weakness of knee flexion and distal motor groups.
