Description
Anterior abdominal viscera are presented in a standing anatomical position, with the stomach in the left upper quadrant continuing into the C shaped duodenum and then into coiled jejunal and ileal loops occupying the central and lower abdomen. Jejunum predominates superiorly and to the left with thicker caliber and more prominent folds, while the ileum trends inferiorly and to the right as it approaches the ileocecal region. Peripheral to the small bowel, the large intestine frames the abdominal cavity, helping orient the small intestine’s relationship to the colonic “gutter” and the pelvic inlet. Coils fill the peritoneal compartment. This anterior, whole torso context matters when you need to teach where symptoms localize and where clinicians go looking first. Proximal small bowel pathology such as duodenal ulcer disease and postbulbar bleeding sits close to the stomach and hepatoduodenal region, while Crohn disease often targets the terminal ileum near the right lower quadrant and ileocecal valve, a common site for endoscopic intubation and surgical resection. Seeing jejunum versus ileum in situ also supports explanations of differential absorption, mesenteric vascular supply, and why small bowel obstruction from adhesions or hernia can distend central loops with step ladder air fluid levels on upright radiographs.
