Description
Spanning the body in anterior anatomical position, the systemic arterial tree arises from the left ventricle as the ascending aorta, continues through the aortic arch, and descends as the thoracic and abdominal aorta along the midline. Superiorly, the brachiocephalic trunk (right), left common carotid, and left subclavian arteries project to the head and upper limb, while the common carotids ascend medial to the internal jugular veins toward the external and internal carotid distributions. Distally, the abdominal aorta bifurcates into the common iliac arteries, which course inferolaterally to become external iliac, femoral, and popliteal arteries, with tibial branches continuing into the leg and foot.
