Description
Prominent in this anterior close-up are the paired kidneys, positioned retroperitoneally on either side of the upper lumbar spine, with the renal pelves at each hilum giving rise to the ureters. Each ureter descends inferiorly and medially along the posterior abdominal wall before curving into the pelvis to enter the urinary bladder at its posterolateral angles (the ureterovesical junctions). The bladder sits midline immediately superior to the pubic symphysis, tapering inferiorly into the bladder neck and proximal urethra in the male. Increased subcutaneous adipose thickness is implied by the body overlay, framing the urinary tract in situ. Attention to the ureteropelvic junction and the proximal ureter matters because this is where obstruction often declares itself, whether from a calculus lodged at the UPJ or from congenital narrowing that leads to hydronephrosis of the renal pelvis and calyces.
