Description
Posterior surface anatomy frames the retroperitoneal kidneys in an obese adult male, with each kidney positioned lateral to the vertebral column and inferior to the costal margin. From the renal pelves, the ureters descend inferomedially along the posterior abdominal wall toward the midline pelvis, terminating at the urinary bladder, which sits anterior to the rectum and superior to the prostate. Subcutaneous adipose thickness is implied by the body habitus, while the urinary tract remains the focal highlight. Orientation is clear. Obesity changes the practical anatomy of the urinary system, even when organ relationships remain textbook: increased perirenal and retroperitoneal fat can obscure renal contours on physical exam and complicate sonographic windows, and a higher risk profile for nephrolithiasis and obstructive uropathy makes accurate ureteral course worth teaching.
