Inferiorly, the gluteus maximus overlies the posterior hip, and the hamstring group (biceps femoris laterally, semitendinosus and semimembranosus medially) tracks down the posterior thigh toward the knee flexor tendons, with the gastrocnemius defining the proximal calf.
