Centered on the posterior trunk, the deep fascia (fascia profunda) is represented as a dense fibrous sheath investing the superficial and intermediate back musculature over the vertebral column. Superiorly it blends with the nuchal region, then continues caudally across the spinous processes and along the thoracolumbar fascia, lying posterior to the intrinsic (deep) back muscles while providing an investing layer to the trapezius and latissimus dorsi. Laterally, the fascial planes follow the contours of the scapular margins and posterior axillary folds, with the deltoid caps visible at the shoulders and cervical paraspinal contours framing the midline.
