Description

Sectioned male kidney anatomy is presented with the renal cortex forming the peripheral rim and the medulla arranged internally as renal pyramids whose papillae project medially into the minor calyces. The minor calyces converge into major calyces, which funnel into the renal pelvis at the hilum, continuing inferiorly as the ureter. Urine flow is easy to track. The ureter exits the kidney medial to the renal parenchyma and descends caudally from the pelvis, aligned for continuity with the urinary bladder. Seeing the calyceal system in section clarifies where obstruction and pain begin. A calculus lodged at the ureteropelvic junction dilates the renal pelvis and calyces first (hydronephrosis) while the renal cortex thins over time, and this relationship is easier to teach in a cutaway than on the external kidney alone. It also maps directly onto urologic imaging, where contrast fills the minor and major calyces before outlining the renal pelvis and ureter on intravenous urography or CT urography. Use this artwork for renal physiology blocks that cover urine concentration and collecting system anatomy, and for clinical teaching on renal colic, hydronephrosis, and congenital ureteropelvic junction obstruction. It also fits urology and radiology materials that need a clean correlation between parenchyma, calyces, renal pelvis, and the proximal ureter in a male urinary tract context. Anatomical accuracy verified by SciePro's Medical Advisory Board.
