Description

Oriented from an anterior perspective, the sectioned male kidney reveals the renal cortex superficially and the renal medulla deep to it, with distinct renal pyramids converging toward the renal papillae. Minor calyces cup the papillae and drain into major calyces, which join medially to form the renal pelvis within the renal sinus. From the pelvis, the ureter emerges at the hilum and descends inferiorly as the narrow muscular tube continuous with the collecting system. The ureteropelvic junction is clearly defined. That funnel-to-tube transition is where obstruction most often declares itself. A calculus lodged at the ureteropelvic junction can produce acute flank pain and hydronephrosis, and this view makes it easy to teach why dilation begins in the calyces and pelvis proximal to the narrowing while the ureter distal to the stone remains comparatively decompressed. Surgeons also rely on this anatomy when planning pyeloplasty for UPJ obstruction, where preserving the caliber and dependent drainage of the renal pelvis matters. Use this illustration for renal physiology and gross anatomy teaching to link urine formation in the pyramids to outflow through the calyceal system, and for urology or radiology content explaining hydronephrosis, ureteral calculi, or cross section correlations seen on CT urography and intravenous urography. It also fits patient-facing educational materials that need an accurate anterior-oriented model of kidney collecting anatomy down to the proximal ureter. Anatomical accuracy verified by SciePro's Medical Advisory Board.
