Description

Arising from the renal pelvis at the kidney hilum, the ureter descends inferiorly as a narrow muscular tube, positioned anterior to the psoas major region in an anterior perspective and continuous proximally with the major calyces collecting urine from the papillae. Renal cortex and medulla are distinguished in section, with medullary pyramids converging toward the renal sinus, where the collecting system sits medial to the parenchyma. The renal artery enters the hilum and divides into segmental branches that course centrally before distributing toward the corticomedullary junction, while the renal vein lies anterior to the artery as it exits toward the inferior vena cava. A small green network suggests lymphatic drainage accompanying the renal vessels.
