Description
Presented in an anterior cutaway, the male kidney is opened in sectional plane to reveal the renal cortex peripheral to the medulla, with striated renal pyramids converging toward the papillae. Minor and major calyces collect centrally into the renal pelvis, which narrows inferiorly to continue as the proximal ureter. A pale calculus occupies the renal pelvis, positioned medial to the parenchyma and directly within the urinary outflow tract. Obstruction is the point. Renal pelvic stones matter because they sit at a mechanical choke point, backing pressure into the calyceal system and setting up hydronephrosis and flank pain when drainage is impaired. This view also clarifies why hematuria can accompany nephrolithiasis: a rigid stone abrades the urothelium of the pelvis and calyces, and edema at the ureteropelvic junction can convert a partial blockage into complete obstruction. For clinicians, it maps cleanly onto CT KUB or IVU teaching, where the calculus is localized relative to the collecting system rather than the nephron-bearing cortex.
