Description
Sectioned renal anatomy is presented in an anterior cross section, exposing the renal cortex superficially and the renal medulla with distinct renal pyramids deep to it. Yellow renal calculi occupy the collecting system, clustered within the minor and major calyces and extending into the funnel of the renal pelvis, which narrows inferiorly to continue as the proximal ureter. Medial orientation is implied by the presence of the pelvis at the hilum, while the parenchyma (nephros) surrounds the calyceal spaces on all sides. Dense stone against delicate urothelium. Placement within the renal pelvis and calyces matters clinically because even a stone that forms within a collecting duct can migrate and obstruct the ureteropelvic junction, driving acute flank pain and hydronephrosis. This cutaway also clarifies why hematuria and infection risk rise with calyceal stones: sharp, irregular mineral surfaces abrade the calyceal mucosa and can impair urine drainage from an affected pyramid. For surgical and endourologic planning, the relationship of stone burden to the infundibula, pelvis, and ureter helps explain when extracorporeal shock wave lithotripsy is less effective and why ureteroscopy or percutaneous nephrolithotomy may be selected.
