Description

Captured in lateral profile, the biceps brachii dominates the anterior compartment of the upper arm, with the long head tendon tracking proximally toward the intertubercular sulcus of the humerus and the short head coursing from the coracoid process deep to the anterior deltoid. Distally, the muscle belly narrows into the biceps tendon crossing the cubital fossa to the radial tuberosity, while the bicipital aponeurosis fans medially toward the antebrachial fascia. Posterior to the biceps, the triceps brachii outlines the posterior arm, and inferior to the deltoid the brachialis and proximal forearm flexor mass occupy a deeper, more anterior position. Breast adipose tissue and superficial thoracic musculature remain visible in the same cutaway, providing a realistic female surface landmark context. Lateral orientation matters because it clarifies the biceps brachii as a supinator and elbow flexor while keeping its shoulder relationships readable, a combination that students often struggle to integrate when only anterior views are provided. Clinically, the long head is the usual pain generator, with tendinopathy, instability in the bicipital groove, and association with SLAP lesions at the superior glenoid labrum driving exam maneuvers and operative decisions such as tenotomy versus tenodesis. A rupture of the long head produces the classic distal muscle bunching (Popeye deformity), and this view helps explain why the contour shifts while elbow flexion can remain partly preserved via brachialis and the short head. Use this asset in upper-limb anatomy labs, sports medicine teaching on anterior shoulder pain, and operative planning graphics for arthroscopic biceps procedures, where tendon course and surface contour are the teaching targets. It also fits well in patient-facing education on proximal biceps rupture and rehabilitation, since the lateral silhouette matches how patients perceive arm shape in profile.
