Presented in lateral profile, the head and upper neck are rendered semi-transparent to expose the encephalon and proximal nerve pathways in an adult Asian woman. The cerebral hemispheres dominate the cranial cavity, with gyral and sulcal contours readable along the superolateral convexity; inferiorly, the brainstem continues caudally to the upper cervical spinal cord within the vertebral canal. Superficial peripheral nerves are schematized as yellow tracts radiating from the cranial base and cervical region, spatially organized anterior to the cervical vertebrae and deep to the skin envelope. Clear topography. A side view like this is the workhorse for teaching cranial nerve origins and the transition from central to peripheral nervous system, because it preserves the anterior to posterior relationships between the cranial base, brainstem, and upper cervical spine.
