Description
Shown in lateral profile, the transparent calvaria and upper cervical vertebrae frame the brain and cervical spinal cord, with the cerebral hemispheric cortex superior and the cerebellum posteroinferior within the posterior cranial fossa. Along the craniovertebral junction, the cord continues inferiorly from the medulla oblongata through the foramen magnum into the cervical spinal canal. A perimedullary vascular network courses longitudinally on the cord surface, with small arterioles and venous channels wrapping anteriorly and posteriorly around the neural tissue, while spinal nerve roots and proximal peripheral nerve pathways project laterally. This side view is a practical way to teach how the spinal cord’s blood supply relates to the surrounding neuroaxis and bony landmarks. Clinically, cord perfusion is unforgiving: compromise of the anterior spinal artery or its segmental feeders can produce anterior cord syndrome with motor weakness and pain and temperature loss below the lesion, a pattern relevant to cervical trauma, dissection, and perioperative hypotension. Seeing vessels draped on a transparent cord also helps explain why vascular malformations (for example, dural arteriovenous fistula) can create congestive myelopathy when venous drainage is impaired.
