Centered in the thorax, the heart sits slightly left of the midline with the ascending aorta rising superiorly to form the aortic arch, then continuing as the descending thoracic and abdominal aorta along the anterior aspect of the vertebral column. From the arch, the brachiocephalic trunk, left common carotid artery, and left subclavian artery project superiorly and laterally into the neck and upper limbs, paired with the internal jugular veins and subclavian veins converging into the brachiocephalic veins. Inferiorly, the inferior vena cava ascends on the right of the abdominal aorta to the right atrium, while the iliac vessels and more distal upper and lower limb arteries and veins extend toward the hands and feet.
