Description
Centered in the thorax, the heart sits obliquely behind the sternum with the apex directed inferolaterally to the left, and the great vessels emerge superiorly from the base. The ascending aorta continues into the aortic arch and descends as the thoracic aorta, while the superior vena cava enters the right atrium from above and the inferior vena cava ascends from the abdomen to the right atrium. Anteriorly, the pulmonary trunk leaves the right ventricle and bifurcates into the right and left pulmonary arteries, and paired pulmonary veins return oxygenated blood to the left atrium. Superficial soft tissues of the anterior chest wall, including breast tissue and overlying skin, are rendered semi-transparent to preserve surface anatomy while keeping the mediastinal relationships legible. Clear landmarks. This anterior-oriented cardiovascular layout matters when you need to teach or plan around the mediastinum, because the spatial arrangement of the aorta, pulmonary outflow tract, and caval inflow predicts where catheters, central venous lines, and surgical planes travel. The relationship of the inferior vena cava to the right atrium and the continuity of the descending aorta into the upper abdomen also support discussions of aortic aneurysm, aortic dissection propagation, and cardiopulmonary bypass cannulation strategies.
