Description
Profile orientation places the heart within the middle mediastinum, with the aortic arch sweeping superiorly and posteriorly before descending as the thoracic and abdominal aorta along the anterior surface of the vertebral column. From that central trunk, major arterial branches are logically traced into the neck and upper limb, then inferiorly toward the pelvis and lower extremity, while paired venous pathways return blood via the superior vena cava from the head and upper body and via the inferior vena cava from the abdomen, pelvis, and legs. Superficial and deep vessels can be read in parallel, with more superficial venous channels running closer to the skin envelope and deeper vessels coursing adjacent to the axial skeleton and within the limb compartments. Left to right relationships are compressed by the lateral view, but anterior versus posterior positioning of the great vessels remains clear.
