Description
Anterior anatomy of the female cardiovascular system is presented through a semi-transparent integument, centering the heart in the middle mediastinum with the ascending aorta and aortic arch curving superiorly and leftward before continuing as the descending thoracic aorta. From the arch, the brachiocephalic trunk (right), left common carotid artery, and left subclavian artery project superiorly and laterally, while paired internal jugular veins descend in the neck to join the subclavian veins as the brachiocephalic veins and superior vena cava. Distally, the subclavian vessels continue into the axilla as the axillary artery and vein and then into the arm as the brachial vessels, and inferiorly the abdominal aorta bifurcates into the right and left common iliac arteries with accompanying iliac veins returning blood toward the inferior vena cava. Color coding distinguishes arterial (red) and venous (blue) pathways. That vessel geometry matters in real clinical work, because anterior relationships guide both vascular access and interpretation of CT angiography and catheter trajectories. The proximity of the internal jugular vein to the common carotid artery in the neck, and the convergence of the brachiocephalic veins into the superior vena cava, are the landmarks that dictate safe central venous catheter placement and explain common malposition patterns. A clean overview.
