Description
Anterior full-body anatomy presents the heart within the middle mediastinum, slightly left of the midline, with the ascending aorta curving superiorly into the aortic arch and continuing inferiorly as the descending thoracic and abdominal aorta. Paired common carotid arteries ascend in the neck while the subclavian arteries course laterally toward the axillae, continuing as the brachial, radial, and ulnar arteries into the forearms and hands. Inferiorly, the abdominal aorta bifurcates into the common iliac arteries, which continue as external iliac and femoral arteries along the anterior thigh, then into popliteal and tibial vessels toward the feet. Superficial and deep venous pathways are also represented, returning blood proximally toward the superior and inferior venae cavae. Clear separation of arterial and venous routes in an anterior orientation supports teaching hemodynamic pathways and clinical localization of vascular disease. This angle maps directly onto common pulse points, including carotid, brachial, radial, femoral, and dorsalis pedis, and it reinforces why emboli from the left heart preferentially travel into carotid and femoral distributions. It also aligns with standard access corridors for coronary angiography and peripheral interventions, where catheter paths often progress from radial or femoral arteries to the aorta and cardiac root.
