Description
Anteriorly, the heart sits in the middle mediastinum with the right atrium and right ventricle positioned to the viewer’s left and the left ventricle forming the left cardiac border to the viewer’s right, while the apex points inferolaterally toward the left. Superior to the ventricles, the ascending aorta continues into the aortic arch, giving rise to the brachiocephalic trunk, left common carotid artery, and left subclavian artery, and the pulmonary trunk courses superiorly before dividing into right and left pulmonary arteries. Systemic veins return to the right atrium via the superior vena cava, with paired brachiocephalic veins converging in the upper thorax; pulmonary veins drain posteriorly into the left atrium but are suggested by their entry into the heart rather than fully exposed. A semi-transparent thoracic wall and breast contour provide surface context, with superficial and deep vessels tracking through the pectoral region. For teaching overall circulatory organization, an anterior composite like this clarifies the great-vessel geometry that students often miss when they only see isolated heart diagrams.
