Description

Centered at the anterior commissure of the vulva, the glans clitoridis forms the distal, rounded terminus of the corpus clitoridis and lies immediately superior to the external urethral orifice and anterior to the vaginal introitus. Laterally, the glans blends into the paired labia minora at their anterior junction, while the prepuce (clitoral hood) reflects over its dorsal aspect as a cap of thin skin. Deep to the surface, the body of the clitoris tracks posteriorly along the pubic symphysis, with the crura extending proximolaterally along the ischiopubic rami. Pelvic context includes the urinary bladder anterior to the uterus, the uterus centrally, and the vagina inferior to the cervix within the bony ring of the pelvis. Accurate depiction of the glans and prepuce matters because small variations in local anatomy drive symptoms and surgical risk. During lysis of clitoral adhesions, excision of epidermal inclusion cysts, or evaluation of clitorodynia, you need a clear mental map of how the clitoral head relates to the labia minora and the urethral meatus to avoid iatrogenic injury and to interpret focal tenderness or scarring. It also helps when explaining sexual pain disorders and arousal anatomy, where the external glans is only the visible component of a larger erectile complex anchored to the pubic arch. Small structure, big consequences. Use this illustration for gross anatomy and pelvic floor teaching in medical, PA, and midwifery curricula, and for OB-GYN or urogynecology patient education materials addressing vulvar anatomy, clitoral hood anatomy, and procedural consent. It also suits atlases and review articles that need a pelvic overview while calling out the clitoral tip and its anterior junction landmarks. Anatomical accuracy verified by SciePro's Medical Advisory Board.
