Description

The common carotid artery ascends in the lateral cervical region and bifurcates superiorly into the internal carotid artery, coursing deep toward the cranial cavity, and the external carotid artery, which gives rise to superficial branches such as the facial, superficial temporal, and occipital arteries along the anterior and posterior scalp margins. Posterior to the carotid system, the vertebral artery tracks superiorly through the transverse foramina of the cervical vertebrae to join the basilar circulation, while venous return is organized around the internal jugular vein deep to the angle of the mandible and the more superficial retromandibular and facial veins. Clear laterality. This lateral perspective matters because it mirrors how clinicians conceptualize vascular corridors during assessment and intervention: the carotid bifurcation level, the relationship of the internal jugular vein to the carotid artery, and the posterior course of the vertebral artery are key landmarks for central venous access, carotid endarterectomy planning, and interpreting duplex ultrasound findings. Facial arterial branches shown anteriorly align with common sites of epistaxis and with laceration patterns where brisk bleeding suggests involvement of the facial or superficial temporal artery.
