Arcing from the anteromedial orbital floor, the inferior oblique muscle (musculus obliquus oculi inferior) courses posterolaterally beneath the globe to insert on the posterolateral sclera, clearly contrasting the straighter, anteroposterior trajectory of the rectus group. A horizontal cross section places the cornea anteriorly and the optic nerve posteriorly, with the medial and lateral rectus muscles bracketing the globe on either side and the superior and inferior rectus muscles occupying the vertical axis. The orbit’s bony margins frame the muscle origins and the confined extraconal space. Short muscle, long path.
