Running in a lateral profile, the male vertebral column is arranged into cervical, thoracic, lumbar, and sacral regions, with intervertebral discs interposed between adjacent vertebral bodies from C2 to S1. Each disc appears as a fibrocartilaginous symphysis, positioned anterior to the zygapophysial (facet) joints and posterior to the anterior longitudinal ligament’s usual course along the vertebral bodies. The cervical and lumbar lordoses and the thoracic and sacral kyphoses frame the discs along a curved weight-bearing axis. Disc height and wedging follow the regional contours. Disc anatomy matters because load sharing and motion segment mechanics depend on the nucleus pulposus and annulus fibrosus behaving as a hydraulic unit under compression and torsion. Lateral views like this help explain why disc degeneration and annular fissuring often concentrate at L4 to L5 and L5 to S1, where shear forces rise with lordosis, and why posterolateral herniation tends to encroach on the traversing nerve root in the lateral recess. Facet orientation is also easier to teach from the side, letting you connect disc space narrowing to secondary facet arthrosis and segmental instability. Small changes in disc height have big consequences.
