Description
Anteriorly, the vertebral bodies stack from the cervical through lumbar regions, continuing into the fused sacrum and coccyx, with intervertebral discs rendered between adjacent vertebrae from C2 to S1. Each disc is presented as a blue fibrocartilaginous pad, with the annulus fibrosus forming the outer ring against the superior and inferior vertebral endplates, while the disc margins sit slightly recessed relative to the anterolateral contours of the vertebral bodies. Superiorly the smaller cervical vertebral bodies transition to the broader, weight-bearing lumbar bodies inferiorly. Segmental spacing is consistent, emphasizing the disc as the interface between vertebrae rather than the posterior elements. Clinically, an anterior spine view clarifies the disc as a structure bound to the vertebral endplates, which matters when teaching disc degeneration, Modic endplate change, and anterior osteophyte formation that often accompanies cervical or lumbar spondylosis. It also frames the disc level as the unit used in anterior surgical corridors such as anterior cervical discectomy and fusion (ACDF) or anterior lumbar interbody fusion (ALIF), where the surgeon targets the disc space while protecting adjacent vascular and visceral structures.
