Description
Anteriorly, the atlas (C1) sits immediately inferior to the occipital bone, framing the upper cervical canal beneath the foramen magnum. The anterior arch forms a smooth convex margin in the midline, with the anterior tubercle projecting forward and the lateral masses widening laterally on either side. Superior articular facets on the lateral masses receive the occipital condyles, while the transverse processes extend laterally and mark the course of the transverse foramina for the vertebral arteries.
