Description
Centered on the second lumbar vertebra (L2) within the lower spinal column, the rendering includes the vertebral body anteriorly and the vertebral arch posteriorly, with stout pedicles leading into broad laminae and a short, thick spinous process. Laterally, the transverse processes project from the vertebral arch, while the superior and inferior articular processes frame the zygapophyseal (facet) joints above and below. Intervertebral discs appear between adjacent lumbar vertebrae, and the sacrum sits inferiorly as the lumbar lordosis transitions into the sacral kyphosis. Two adjacent lumbar levels are highlighted in blue to orient the viewer to the focal segment. L2 is a frequent reference point in both biomechanics and procedural anatomy because it lies near the transition from the more mobile upper lumbar segments to the heavier load bearing lower lumbar spine. Facet joint orientation at this level helps explain patterns of lumbar rotation and extension pain, and it influences where degenerative spondylosis and pars interarticularis stress changes are assessed.
