Description
Shown in cross-section, the anterior segment frames the crystalline lens as a biconvex body positioned posterior to the iris and pupil and anterior to the vitreous body. Fine zonular fibers (zonule of Zinn) span from the equator of the lens to the ciliary body, forming a circumferential suspensory apparatus that sits just posterior to the posterior chamber. Anteriorly, the cornea and anterior chamber align with the pupil to define the optical axis, while the sclera forms the outer fibrous tunic continuous with the corneal limbus. Accommodation and its failure are easiest to teach from this cutaway because you can track force transmission from ciliary muscle to zonule to the lens capsule. Presbyopia follows age-related stiffening of the lens substance and capsule, reducing curvature change despite intact ciliary contraction, and the same anatomy underlies phakic and pseudophakic optics after cataract extraction. This perspective also supports clinical discussion of ectopia lentis when zonular weakness allows lens subluxation, as in Marfan syndrome, or zonular dialysis after blunt trauma. Use it for gross anatomy and ocular physiology modules when introducing refractive power, accommodation, and the relationship of the ciliary body to the lens equator.
