Description
Oblique lateral sectioning of the male globe places the cornea and anterior chamber anteriorly, with the iris forming a diaphragm around the pupil and the crystalline lens positioned immediately posterior to it. Fine zonular fibers (suspensory ligament of the lens, zonula ciliaris) radiate from the equatorial lens capsule to the ciliary body, spanning the posterior chamber between iris and lens. The ciliary processes sit just peripheral to the lens equator, while the vitreous body occupies the posterior segment and the retina lines the internal surface deep to the sclera. Spatially, the zonular apparatus is the mechanical link between ciliary muscle contraction and lens curvature during accommodation, so a lateral perspective clarifies how anterior and posterior zonular bundles tension the lens capsule at the equator. This relationship matters in cataract surgery and lens-based refractive procedures, where zonular weakness or dialysis (as in pseudoexfoliation syndrome or after blunt trauma) complicates capsulorhexis formation, phacoemulsification stability, and intraocular lens centration.
