Description
Sectioned through the anterior segment of the male eye, the cornea lies most anterior, with the iris forming a circumferential diaphragm just posterior to it and bordering the pupillary aperture. Immediately posterior to the iris sits the crystalline lens, encapsulated and biconvex, with a denser central nucleus surrounded by a softer cortical shell. From the lens equator, the zonular fibers (ciliary zonule) course radially outward to insert into the ciliary body, which forms a muscular ring peripheral to the lens and anterior to the vitreous body; posteriorly, the vitreous humor occupies the large chamber in front of the retina. This cutaway offers a clean teaching view of accommodation mechanics: ciliary muscle contraction reduces zonular tension, allowing the elastic lens capsule to increase lens curvature for near focus, while relaxation tightens zonules and flattens the lens for distance. It also frames common clinical problems in their correct spatial context, including age related nuclear sclerosis (cataract) within the lens nucleus, cortical spokes in the periphery, and zonular weakness or dialysis that can complicate phacoemulsification, especially in pseudoexfoliation syndrome. Small distances matter here. Use this illustration in gross anatomy, ophthalmology, and optometry teaching to pair lens morphology with anterior segment physiology, or in surgical education to orient capsulorhexis, hydrodissection, and intraocular lens placement relative to the capsule and zonules.
