Description
Posterior thoracic anatomy is presented beneath a semi-transparent skin overlay, centering the vertebral column with paired levatores costarum arising from the transverse processes in the upper thoracic spine and coursing inferolaterally to the ribs. Each slip spans one to two intercostal spaces, lying deep to the iliocostalis and longissimus portions of the erector spinae and superficial to the costotransverse joints. Rib angles sit lateral to the spinous processes, and the oblique fiber direction of the levatores costarum contrasts with the more longitudinal erector spinae mass. Subtle trunk rotation brings the scapular region into the frame. Functionally, the levatores costarum are small but telling because they sit at the junction of vertebral mechanics and rib motion, an area that drives thoracic expansion and often concentrates pain.
