Description
Arising from the intracranial course of cranial nerve X (vagus, pneumogastric nerve), the meningeal branch is traced from the region of the jugular foramen along the posterior cranial fossa dura. From a superior view into the cranial cavity, the internal base of skull is rendered with the clivus and petrous temporal bones forming a posterior boundary, while multiple foramina punctuate the sphenoid and temporal regions for passage of the cranial nerves. Yellow nerve trajectories radiate from the brainstem toward the skull base openings, with the vagal rootlets positioned posterolateral to the clivus and directed toward the jugular foramen, where the meningeal ramus turns to run on the endocranial surface rather than continuing extracranially. Blue vascular lines sit adjacent to these neural corridors, consistent with the close packing of meningeal vessels and nerves at the skull base. Orientation at the jugular foramen matters. The vagus nerve shares this tight bony interval with the glossopharyngeal and accessory nerves and the internal jugular vein, and the meningeal branch can be a source of dural pain referral in posterior fossa pathology or after irritation near the foramen.
