Description
Centered on the internal base of a male skull, the cranial fossae are opened to expose the dural surface and the exits of the cranial nerves as they course toward the foramina. Yellow nerve trunks radiate from the brainstem region in the posterior cranial fossa, with the hypoglossal nerve (CN XII) directed anterolaterally toward the hypoglossal canal, medial to the jugular foramen and inferior to the posterior clinoid region. A small meningeal ramus is shown turning back from the main hypoglossal trunk to distribute to adjacent dura mater along the clival and posterior fossa lining. Bone landmarks such as the sella turcica, petrous temporal ridges, and margins of the foramen magnum orient the viewer in superior, inferior, medial, and lateral relationships. Emphasis on the meningeal branch matters because it is a frequent point of confusion with the meningeal branches of upper cervical nerves and with meningeal supply associated with nearby arterial trunks in the skull base. Dural innervation in the posterior cranial fossa is clinically relevant in referred occipital and retroauricular headache patterns, and it becomes a practical concern during far lateral and transcondylar approaches where dissection near the hypoglossal canal risks traction on small recurrent meningeal fibers. Small structure. Real consequences. Useful applications include teaching skull base foramina and cranial nerve topography in gross anatomy, neuroanatomy, and ENT or neurosurgery modules, and illustrating dural innervation discussions in headache, posterior fossa pain referral, or operative corridor planning texts.
