Presented beneath a semi-transparent integument, the paired rectus abdominis muscles run vertically on either side of the anterior midline, separated by the linea alba from the xiphoid region superiorly toward the pubic crest and pubic symphysis inferiorly. Segmental tendinous intersections traverse each muscle belly, creating the familiar rectus “blocks” and anchoring the muscle to the anterior layer of the rectus sheath. Laterally, the rectus margins imply the transition toward the aponeurotic contributions of external oblique, internal oblique, and transversus abdominis, which envelope the muscle within the dense sheath. This side-biased perspective is useful because it reinforces that rectus abdominis is not a superficial free-standing muscle, it is constrained within an aponeurotic compartment whose integrity influences both force transmission and surgical planes.
