Description
Running vertically on either side of the linea alba, the paired rectus abdominis muscles are shown in anterior view with their segmented profile created by tendinous intersections. Inferiorly, each muscle tapers to a broad tendon inserting on the pubic crest and pubic symphysis, with the midline aponeurosis continuing across the anterior abdominal wall. Superiorly, the rectus columns approach the costal margin and lower thoracic cage, while the external oblique muscle borders them laterally and the intercostal musculature is partially exposed between the ribs. Male trunk musculature frames the field, including proximal arm muscles at the shoulder and upper limb. Attention to the tendinous intersections and linea alba matters when you are teaching the architecture of the rectus sheath and the way the anterior abdominal wall transmits force between rib cage and pelvis. Surgeons rely on these midline landmarks for incision planning, and a true linea alba approach reduces bleeding compared with cutting across the rectus belly, while paramedian or muscle-splitting routes change postoperative pain patterns and risk to segmental nerves.
