Description
Focused on the sixth cervical vertebra (C6), the rendering centers the vertebral body anteriorly with the vertebral arch posteriorly forming the boundaries of the vertebral foramen. Laterally, the transverse processes project on each side and are expected to contain the foramen transversarium, while the spinous process sits posterior and often appears shorter and more bifid than in the thoracic region. Superior and inferior articular processes frame the zygapophysial (facet) joints above and below, and the pedicles connect the body to the laminae in the typical cervical configuration. Small details matter. C6 is also distinguished by a prominent anterior tubercle, the carotid tubercle. C6 is a frequent surface and procedural landmark because the carotid tubercle on the anterior tubercle of the transverse process allows anterior compression of the common carotid artery, and it guides orientation during anterior cervical approaches. The relationship of the foramen transversarium to the vertebral artery becomes clinically relevant at this level when discussing vertebral artery injury risk, cervical spine fracture patterns, or osteophytic encroachment in cervical spondylosis. Facet orientation at C6 also helps explain coupled motion in the mid to lower cervical spine and why foraminal narrowing at C5-C6 commonly correlates with C6 radiculopathy symptoms in the thumb and radial forearm.
