Description
Centered in the neck portion of the spine, the C5 vertebra is shown from an anterior perspective with the vertebral body in the midline, flanked laterally by the pedicles and transverse processes. The uncinate processes rise along the superolateral margins of the superior endplate, forming the uncovertebral (Luschka) joints with C4. Inferiorly, the C5 body relates to the C5 to C6 intervertebral disc, while the transverse foramina sit lateral to the body within the transverse processes for passage of the vertebral vessels. It is a compact bone segment. C5 matters because it sits near the functional center of cervical lordosis and commonly participates in degenerative change, where uncovertebral osteophytes and disc height loss can narrow the intervertebral foramina and contribute to C5 radiculopathy.
